The heavy, musty smell of the nerfs hit Kylin hard as she opened the gate and approached the herd. There were about 50 of them wandering about in the large pen, grazing the tall Lothal grass. She surveyed the herd and took a few steps forward, making sure to avoid droppings.
The human herders who had hired Kylin had said that one of the pregnant nerfs hadn't been eating. They hadn't bothered to point out which of the 50 nerfs was the ailing one, but the omission hadn't been from carelessness. Kylin had been working with the Jerikko family for a year now, and they knew she needed little to no direction. Of course, they didn't know why she had such a connection with the animals. They just were happy with the job well done.
The young Pantoran shut her eyes for a moment and reached out with the Force. She felt the life forces of the nerfs, their mumbling wants for food, complaints about the bloodflies. As she connected with each of the animals, she felt a soft contentedness as they acknowledged her. Then, Kylin found the ailing nerf. She sensed its discomfort, and the tiny life inside it.
Kylin stepped forward, moving through the herd. The nerfs stepped aside to let her pass, although a few of them nuzzled her in greeting. She reached back and pet a few in return. She wasn't the kind to be affectionate to people, but animals? Anytime.
The shaggy brown nerf's belly was swollen with a baby. Kylin murmured a greeting to the animal; it turned and lowed mournfully at her.
"It's all right, mama," Kylin said, reaching out to give comfort through the Force. "I'll take care of you." She set down her crate of veterinary supplies and touched the nerf's belly. She examined the creature with her eyes and her senses.
"Your baby's turned around," she told the nerf. "I'm going to flip him so he'll come out properly, okay?"
"Moooo." Willingness laced with anxiety.
Kylin placed her hand against the belly, reaching out to the tiny life. Then, very carefully, she used the Force to turn him. It took only a minute or so--since Kylin had started her veterinary work a couple of years ago, she'd had plenty of practice.
"There," Kylin said. "You'll feel better now, mama." She scratched the nerf behind her ears; it mooed a thank you. "Bet the Jedi couldn't fix anyone's problems as fast as I just did." Kylin scowled. "They couldn't even fix their own."
