Star Wars Refugees practices a fluid timeline, which means that there is no solid set of dates or years that events take place. However, there is a core continuity for the site that is directly affected by events written in the Refugee Roleplaying forum. If a thread is completed that you feel should be included in the timeline, PM staff so we can consider it for inclusion.
The Timeline
After Palpatine's death, infighting and rebellion led to the decline of the Empire. Within a few years, it had splintered into a number of smaller governments all claiming legitimacy. In the void left by the Empire's collapse, the former leaders of the Rebel Alliance formed a New Republic. With the Empire and its agents mostly gone from the Galaxy, the Jedi Order was once again able to establish itself on Naboo. A world of peace and tranquility, distant from the politics that had destroyed it during the Clone Wars.
However, things would not go the way the Republic wanted. A new shadowy Emperor appeared on the fortress world of Bastion and gathered together the largest remaining Imperial government under his command. Assisted by capable military and civic leaders, he led the resurgent Galactic Empire to many victories against the still young New Republic.
Within two decades of Palpatine's death the Empire reclaimed the Galactic capital of Coruscant, once again renaming it Imperial Center as the first Emperor had. By now the remaining splintered Imperial factions were forced to acknowledge this new Emperor's legitimacy. The Empire had been reborn, though still not as powerful as it had been before its collapse.
Another threat formed within New Republic space as the void left by the death of Palpatine and Vader was filled with a new breed of Sith. Ancient Sith hidden from the Emperor and young Darksiders freed from the Empire's yoke gathered to form the Sith Council. Their dark influence corrupted and conquered system after system, gnawing at the Republic from one side while the other slowly fell to the powerful Imperial military.
In the wake of this onslaught, the New Republic government scattered, with individual systems still holding out against domination. They joined together in a new Rebel Alliance, allying with the Jedi Order to try and stop the evils of the Galaxy.
For a while, they seemed to hold out, but as the Empire grew in strength it became more and more apparent they were fighting on borrowed time. Finally, the Emperor made his move. Under the leadership of Grand Moff Akio Kahoshi the First Imperial Fleet assaulted the Rebel stronghold at Tython, decimating their remaining forces and leaving only scattered cells behind. The fleet then moved on to Naboo.
At Naboo, an unexpected event led to the betrayal and assassination of the Queen of Naboo by Princess of Theed Celeste Mason. Her blaming the murder on the Jedi Order caused the people of Naboo to surrender to the Empire without a fight, allowing the Empire and its Inquisition to swarm the Jedi killing or capturing most of the Order. Under the leadership of Jedi Master Mak Manto, and assisted by the remnant of Rogue Squadron and some gungans the remaining Jedi made their escape. The gungans involved would pay for this with their lives, and with the enslavement of their entire populace.
The Jedi met with the surviving Rebels at Scarrif to form a new Resistance. No longer would they attempt to hold territory while they numbered so few. They have chosen to take a different approach and now operate as cells scattered throughout the Galaxy. With this model, the death of any one cell no longer threatens to destroy the entire Resistance. Whether they succeed in reclaming the Galaxy has yet to be seen.
